FSX Steam Edition, Aerosoft F-16 missing liveries

I am having only 3 liveries after re-installing Aerosoft F-16, I checked the "best answer" on Aerosoft forum and it looks to me to be incorrect or though it will appear to work it will give an incorrect configuration.

The problem is that a lot of the F-16 liveries reference the "Aerosoft F-16A 9\Panel" folder and if you look in that folder, there is no panel.cfg, but there are Panel.cfg.SP2 and Panel.cfg.Xpack. So I would conclude an installation step is missing when Aerosoft installer does not recognise Steam Edition and so does not rename one of those files. I simply make a copy of the Panel.cfg.Xpack file and rename it to Panel.cfg. As the other liveries reference this panel, suddenly they are all available to FSX once more. If you edit that file you will see it is not exactly the same as the one in "Aerosoft F-16AM Display\Panel", there are also other files in this folder, so the correct solution is to just copy/rename the single file.

Virtual Point Break, Beechcraft King Air over Lake Powell

Remember the sky-dive scene from that classic Surf movie, Point Break (1991)? It was filmed with a Beechcraft 65-A90 King Air over Lake Powell, Utah.

So I took my Carenado Beechcraft C90B, chose a paint job closest to the Point Break one and takeoff heading north-east from Page Municipal KPGA. I think in reality, the scene was filmed from much higher than the 4000ft mentioned in the script. Unfortunately FSX/Carenado does not render the correct registration (N50JJ) on the tail.

So here is my scene:

VFR France Bretagne and FSX Steam Edition Compatibility

I have only just taken a route over Brittany to discover my VFR France scenery (version 1.1), does not seem to be working. I have tried disabling all my addon scenery and it is still broken. The files are sitting in the correct folder and in the scenery library, but the photo textures are not in the game. Things like harbours are there. Here is a screenshot of the approach to Quiberon:

I have tried un-installing them and re-installing them and to no effect. I can only conclude there is some compatibility problem with this scenery and the Steam Edition. The only one I have found so far. Would be interesting to know if version 2.0 of the scenery works. Still, I have a lot of addons installed and I am not sure I tested the scenery when I first installed it. It's a shame as I really liked the Bretagne Photo scenery.

So, I sent an email to France VFR support and they said yes it's not supported but recommended I try installing to a dummy folder (I pointed the installer at the old FSX folder, it requires at least the FSX.exe in the folder). This seemed to do the trick and Quiberon was back! Apparently version 2 of the scenery is compatible with Steam Edition.

Update: It is still not quite right as the Autogen is missing. When I try to add the Autogen, the Photo texture disappear!

Round the World, Mount Snowdon, St Athan to Jersey

Lately I have been a bit distracted my FSX Steam Edition and some new Addons. Getting back to my round the world flight. So my last flight ended up at Caernarfon, I chose the scenic route through Snowden National Park, VFR toward Brecon and then landing at St Athan Air Base on the South Wales coast.

Next up, I am learning to use the Autopilot and GPS/Flight Plan to get me to RNAS Merryfield EGDW, It turns out to be a quite unremarkable default airport. My route to Jersey takes me over Charmouth, that I visually recognise from journeys I have made through the town by car.

For Jersey Airport EGJJ, I am using the free version of the Jersey Xtreme by UK2000. My initial approach was too fast and steep and the runway is fairly short, so I had to go-around and try again. Not totally realistic that I changed the paint job during the flight!

Aerosoft German Airfields, Volume 1, Island Hopping

As a diversion from flying round the world, I took a quick tour of some German Islands, in of course my German livery, BN-2 Islander. I was really impressed with the Autogen German houses and the photo-real textures. I think the scenery is good value as it's not just the airports that are included but also the detailed island scenery. Some very short airfields, so recommend either the Islander or Twin Otter. The package includes 15 high detail airports and VFR charts.

FSX Steam Edition Upgrade

I just noticed that the Steam Edition is on special offer at the moment, so for 5 Euro I now have the Steam Edition. I downloaded it while I still have access to broadband as I may only be on 3G soon. Even by carefully following instructions to wipe my old FSX Gold/Acceleration install, I still must have had some left over bits that confused Steam Edition when it installed. The problem being, installing Addons, they were still looking in the old FSX folders. I kind of fixed things by running a special FSX registry fix, the result works, but it's a bit of a mix of FSX/FSX-SE folders. Very confusing where the actual scenery.cfg now lives, so I only update it via the program.

It took quite a while to re-install all my add-ons, but they mostly worked, although some required manually adding the scenery folder. This all going into my new 120GB SSD I also purchased. I probably could have done with a bigger one to be honest, but budget is tight. It does seem to improve the loading time significantly.

My impressions of Steam Edition, is it maybe has slightly better frame rate and not so many bugs e.g. the texture popping. Of course it also includes improved Multi-player and lower use of Virtual Address Space, so less Out Of Memory errors for those with lots of addons.

It has some annoying Steam things like the adverts and having to launch Steam, which then checks for updates. The Steam Client service sneakily will modify Windows Firewall settings if one attempts to block it, but it can be blocked by adding advanced rules in the Firewall to block steam.exe and the TCP/UDP port ranges (Google Steam ports).

I also added all the Steam URLs into Windows host file. I did this, as I cannot afford the 3G bandwidth to update the game or be bothered with the adverts. It's a shame Steam does not allow the user to control this, as FSX is mostly a single player game and should not require updating as a priority.

Round the World flight, start Sligo, Ireland

I have been reading up on some round the world flight ideas, inspired by randomly exploring remote islands such as Easter Island, South Georgia, Kerguelen Islands, hulhule island (Maldives), Ascension, Edinburgh of the Seven Seas, Pitcairn Islands, Totegegie. So I come up with an idea to fly around the world, mostly Southern Hemisphere and link up with some of my installed scenery.

Having to chose aircraft, I am looking for one with a good range for the long distance legs between islands. I chose the Carenado Beechcraft B200 King Air. I am also going to alternate with the Carenado A36 Bonanza, as I really like flying this little one.

I am starting in Sligo, as it is the nearest airport to where I live, giving me a chance to test out my recently installed Orbx Ftx Ireland scenery. The freeware airport I have for Sligo is still an improvement over the one included in FTX. I have to say I am dissapointed that some of the landmark mountains in this area are not well represented, Benbulben and Benwiskin.

I fly over to North Ireland, Enniskillen, then head south to Abbeyshrule Aerodrome EIAB (no landing), then fly east to Casement Airbase EIME on the edge of the Wicklow Mountains. I chose this route to familiarise myself with the navigation systems.

For maps, I have found a great free resource at University of Texas Libraries, where there is an extensive collection of high quality Tactical Pilotage Charts.

I am flying in real-time, for the moment using fair weather settings and quite realistic light model.

Error with Orbx ObjectFlow.dll

I installed an update to the Orbx libraries, version 150331, as recommended by FTX Central 2. On starting FSX (Gold/Acceleration), I get an error dialog box, giving a problem with ObjectFlow.dll (version 1,0,10,2)

To get around this problem, I disable the DLL from: %USER%/AppData/Roaming/Microsoft/FSX/dll.xml

Just edit the file with Notepad and change the disabled setting from False to True in the group <Launch.Addon>

Maybe an older version of the DLL works, but I am not sure what benefit ObjectFlow adds, so I am happy to disable it.

Sumburgh EGPB to Fair Isle EGEF, Shetland

This flight using my BN-2 Islander and ORBX FTX Scotland scenery. I was very impressed with the airport of Sumburgh, good detail, animations and AI traffic. I departed using runway 27 and flew direct to Fair Isle. One small glitch, while I was holding short of the runway waiting for Cessna to land, the Cessna landed and taxied right into my aircraft. Sumburgh has a VOR beacon (117.35).

It is a short 31 Mile flight roughly SSW to Fair Isle. I landed at Fair Isle on runway 24, the runway is bumpy and has an initial up slope, it's quite narrow and short (1762 ft). Some nice parked vehicles at he airport and animated people. Was definitely easier landing in the Islander than the Twin Ottter.

If you really like this area, it may be worth investing in more detailed scenery for Sumburgh, which Orbx have released as a separate package.

Best Freeware aircraft, IRIS F-20 Tigershark

I just found this one, it's ex-payware from IRIS Simulations. The Northrop F-20D Tigershark Prototype.

It's got a really nice flight model, high maximum speed and very friendly on frame rates.

The F-20 was developed from the F5E Tiger II, but never went into production due to changing of export regulations favouring the F-16. It has a top speed of 2,414 km/h.

Three models are added to SimObjects folder, F-20C, F-20D and F-20D AGILE (thrust vectoring).

I have been flying the RAF paint job, No. 63 Squadron based at Chivenor. You can see the model on YouTube on P3D. There is a total of 19 paint jobs to chose from. Select "IRIS Simulations" on the publisher dropdown list. I definitely find this handles more realistically and easier to land than the Goshawk T45, which seems to oscillate at low approach speeds. It also is now my fastest aircraft, much faster than the Acceleration pack F-18.

Twin Otter approach to St Barts, TFFJ, FlyTampa

My favourite aircraft for island hopping is the Britten-Norman BN2 Islander and it is perfect for landing at St Barts, which is a very challenging runway to land on. Drift low over the trees and road on the hill and dive onto the runway, to avoid running of runway and ending up on the beach, or having to go around.

I have now upgraded my scenery for this area by using the excellent package for St Maarten, St Barts and Saba by FlyTampa.

It is much more detailed than the freeware package I was using and is quite frame rate friendly. It has excellent scenery for the small island of Saba and of course the famous runway of St Maarten, that takes big jets.

I have trying the landing with my old DH6 Twin Otter, version 1.10 from Aerosoft, not the latest extended version as I cannot afford that yet. The Twin Otter is a faster aircraft than the islander, but has similar characteristics on lading on short runways. After a few attempts, I land fine, but I would say it's still easier in the Islander. Gustaff III runway is only 650 metres long, what makes it real difficult it the steep approach angle required and obscured runway, by the hill immediately before the threshold.

Corsica VFR Scenery, Photo HD plus freeware

Corsica is a place I would love to visit in real life. It is a mountainous island in the Mediterranean Sea, a department of France (Corse). I already had some very good VFR scenery from FranceVFR, for North and South Brittany (Bretangne). I loaded up the France VFR Photo HD scenery for Corsica.

I was not too impressed, as it was mainly a flat photo scenery with very little 3D objects. I am using FSGenesis mesh, which provides adequate terrain mesh. I think this product integrates better with FranceVFR NextMESH. So I did a bit of research on YouTube and spotted some video that looks much better than the scenery I have, so I was wondering how they did it as there is no clue on the video.


After some hunting I find this French website that gives some freeware for updating the Photo scenery. I find it not easy to follow, but basically there is some addon scenery to download, unpack manually and copy into various addon scenery folders. Then manually add the areas to the FSX scenery library. Finally go to another website to download the military base Solenzara that seems to replace the quite empty LFKS airport.

After getting it all working (apart from the static aircraft which is beyond me), I find the frame rate takes quite a hit in the built up areas, so I drop some of my settings:

The results are quite impressive, though not quite as per the YouTube. I still need to get static aircraft on the Solenzara airport and some of the runways are quite elevated above the surrounding scenery.

Gibraltar X, trick flight through road tunnel

I was exploring around Aerosoft's Gibraltar X scenery and was having a bit of fun. I made it through the tunnel in the terminal building on my first attempt, flying my BN2 Islander.

I nearly took the roof of that bus that was just entering the tunnel. It's interesting that on the replay, the bus is not there. I really like this scenery package. Another trick I did, was land a helicopter on the ridge, then change it into the Islander and launch the aircraft a bit like a hang glider off the top. It works fine.

UK2000 VFR Airfields, Volume 1

Well I just installed VFR Airfields Volume one from UK2000 Scenery. The pack includes 78 airfields covering the southern part of England and Wales. Two of them I already had as part of the BN2 Islander package from Flight1 (Old Sarum and Bembridge). So I spent a lot of the day comparing some duplicate airports and airfields that I already had in freeware, and then removing them. There was nothing that I had that was better than what is included in VFR Airfields.

The fields blend well with my UTX and Ground Environment X and the frame rates are really good (with a few exceptions). I will start to post my explorations, but for now, I have a sample screenshot from St. Athan RAF base (EGDX) in South Wales. It's right next to Cardiff Airport. I flew there from Welshpool in my T45C Goshawk that I am warming to.

There are some sample airports included in two packs, one for the Volume 2 and one for Volume 3. Each of the sample packs have 8 airports from the full retail pack. There is no sample pack for Volume 1. The website also has reduced detail free versions of some of it's Xtreme airports series, including Jersey, which I have installed.
